The development of Dynamic Vapour Sorption
(DVS) by Professor Darryl Williams in 1994 revolutionised vapour sorption measurements.
The labour intensive desiccator test was brought into the modern world of isotherms and computerised data capture and walk away operation. All SMS models are designed, developed and produced in house. The latest DVS models include at the heart of the system a new, purpose designed SMS UltraBalance, replacing the dated Cahn technology.DVS is now a valued tool in analytical laboratories all over the world. Within R & D applications range from polymorphism and stability studies to studies of the bulk and surface adsorption effects of water and organic vapours. It’s also a quality control analysis techniques for both scale-up and production, and can be found within the packaging area, measuring both the efficacy and permeability of packaging materials, and the effects of humidity and temperature on the samples within the packaging.
|
| There are currently four models in the DVS range which start with the compact and affordable water vapour Intrinsic; then we see three others, based on the high spec and versatile Advantage platform.
These include the parallel sample processor DV-HT for screening multiple samples and the latest variant the DVS Vacuum system for pressures down to 10-3 Torr; ideal for DVS of porous materials. The "base" Advantage DVS has steadily evolved from a solvent resistant, 21cfr featured model to include options like sample pre-heaters, a high resolution colour microscope camera, Raman and NIR interfaces and real time P/Po measurements with organic vapours from Ethanol to Chloroform.

The unique Surface Energy Analyser from SMS is a second generation instrument based on the principles of Inverse Gas Chromatography developed in their first IGC of ten years ago. The SEA is a purpose designed unit. Unlike the original IGC it is not built around an off-the shelf GC and hence it is more compact, more versatile and easier to use. The basic principle is to flow selected vapours across your solid samples in a closed tube and detect changes with an FID.
The SEA system is for chemists who want to study surface energetics, map surfaces for energy heterogeneity, measure heats of sorption, study adsorption isotherms, phase transitions and diffusion kinetics.
Surface Energy Analysis comes with facilities for up to 12 solvent vapours, a temperature range from 15 ~ 150C (high temp option), a variable volume injection, an optional thin film accessory, optional humidity control and dedicated easy to fill and lower cost columns. The SEA can accept 2 columns at once.

Vapour Generator Instrument (VGI)|
In
simplest terms the VGI is a closed environment chamber for
microscopy.
The VGI
2000M can be used to provide optical and spectroscopic data of solvent-adsorbate interactions that are vital in their own right but also complement
the sort of gravimetric data acquired by Dynamic Vapour Sorption (DVS). Studies include moisture induced phase transitions, vapour phase crystal growth, degradation and caking of foodstuffs, microbial growth, dissolution of solids, pharmaceutical hydrate formation and vapour-surface chemistry.
Through its custom designed sample area/humidity generation unit, the VGI successfully sidesteps condensation and control problems often encountered with traditional stand-alone humidity generators. By combining the two components into one thermally managed system the VGI delivers unrivalled performance in terms of humidity stability, control and reproducibility. |

Precision Relative Humidity Generator (Genesys)
A totally new,
stand alone vapour generator for use with any instrument or
equipment that needs RH controlled atmospheres. Provides RH
from zero to 98% on a heated line at selectable temperatures
from15C to 45C. There is also an option for extending
temperature to 85C.
The Genesys has a one litre water reservoir and physically
weighs about 20Kg and is operated entirely from a Windows
program on your PC
