     Particular Sciences Ltd

Particular Sciences was founded 1989 to provide technical support in material characterisation in Ireland.
This was a gap in the scientific infrastructure at the time and the company has steadily grown with the market and also with its principals. We now support > 200 companies in pharmachem, minerals, food, pigments and increasingly in research with nanotechnology and biotech. We represent a small group of specialist companies, leaders in their technologies.

We have eight full time staff and two contract/consultant colleagues. Our premises are in Rosemount Business Park about 1 Km from the Town Centre Blanchardstown.

Mission Statement

"Our mission is to maintain excellence in material characterisation technologies and to provide the best possible support to our customers in Ireland and Northern Ireland."

Our Identity

The design in our logo, is a representation of a rotating cutting mill, such as may be used in size reduction of  materials. It evolved from our original image of blue/grey particle when we moved to 3D design. It is properly called "spinning blades" and uses our three corporate colours.

bright ideas

The Present and the Future:

Support will be the focus of our development over the next few years. We consider support as the most important activity we have, whether installing, training or servicing your instruments we will strive to be responsive and supportive. If we let you down or don't come up to scratch, please tell us.

CRM:    We have been developing a customer relationship package to better respond to customers, to log calls and requests and plan field jobs. Based on the very reliable Act from Sage (currently version 9.0) we have extended ACT with all the equipment records and service history. Integral to this is a Help Desk package that we use to coordinate jobs and minimise the chances of not tasking a support request or need. There have been some teething troubles with software as we upgraded (isn't there always) but these are hopefully resolved.

ISO9001: We have also embarked on a project to complete our Quality Manual and to apply for ISO9001 certification early in 2009. This is quite a task to fit into a busy schedule of fully occupied staff, so we have contracted Donnchadha Quilty to coordinate and manage the project.

1989~2009:    Next year is also our 20th anniversary as a company and it would be great to get the certification for ISO that year. Lets see what else we can do!

Anne Dempsey:

Anne has been with the company since our move in 1993 to the offices in Castleknock Village when we were only 3 people covering all the duties of a small company. Anne joined to structure accounts, filing and doubled as receptionist and has been central to our growth and success.
Anne is now in charge of all aspects of administration and HR and accounts.

Iwona Pompka:

Iwona joined us in 2005 to organise the growing service contract, IQ/OQ program and the scheduling & timetabling of all field work. Iwona has a Masters degree in logistics and is key to support running smoothly. Iwona also runs our server based CRM and database systems and recently has a more marketing oriented role with Gerry and Sean developing e~services, newsletters and web sites.

John Fleming:

John joined PSL in 2003 originally as a field engineer on the Malvern range. John has a Ph.D. from DCU having worked in Biotechnology and has a wide knowledge of instrumentation and analytical techniques. His work for PSL on validation aspects have allowed us to develop a full support organisation, a function he is now in charge of. John also acts as the Health & Safety officer and is actively pursuing our ISO accreditation.  He is also the primary engineer for service of Micromeritics instrumentation.

Gerry Power:

Gerry started mid summer 2007. Many of you know him, from his 25 years with AGB Scientific in equipment and instrument sales. Gerry has a degree in physics from DIT and is now responsible for all of our sales and the future growth of the company. He is working on a program of getting around the customers, so you should meet him soon!

Gerry has strong environmental almost green tendencies (no not politically) so he will also encourage us to be more responsible with the environment. Hobbies...well golf of course.

John Sloane

John is the latest recruiy having joined PSL in 2011 as a Technical Specialist, covering sales of our newer instruments and supporting some established systems in the field.

He has a good knowledge of various analytical techniques, gained from working in an analytical laboratory and then in the laboratory instrument supply business for over 20 years. His experience includes Spectroscopy, Chromatography and Electrochemistry and he has a degree in  Chemistry from TCD.

John likes travelling and looks forward to meeting all our customers in due course.

Danielle Dempsey:

Danielle has been with us since early in the summer 2007. She has been working as receptionist, and general admin. assistant in the main office helping make all the systems run smoothly.

Arthur O'Kelly:
Arthur joined us the summer 2008 after many years with AGB Scientific.

He is a very experienced service engineer with a vast knowledge of analytical instruments and support systems. Arthur is a senior engineer with Field responsibility and works in customer support.

Arthur also has a young family with young daughter and baby son and a relatively new house so he's a busy man these days. It doesn't leave much time for his outdoor hobbies.

Sean Quilty:

Last but not least. Originally a microbiologist - Sean has considerable experience of particle sizing and analytical technologies since the earliest,  pre-instrumental methods for monitoring aerosols and suspensions. Having spent some years in UCD in environmental impacts and pesticide research; Sean joined AGB Scientific and helped build their instrument sales with chromatography, spectroscopy and data processing. Sean's role in PSL has changed with the years. Currently he is the Managing Director of the company and is responsible for marketing alongside Iwona and Gerry and for technical support & training alongside John Fleming.

Past staff you may remember:

Some of our colleagues who moved out of Particular Sciences to other (some say better) things who are still in periodic touch. Do you remember them?

  • Like Dermot Brogan who serviced Malvern and Leco instruments in the early 2000's. Dermot moved back to South Africa and now has a business erecting high stuff for their film industry! Using his skills at climbing and his strengths in a country with a much better climate.

  • And then do you remember Antoine Babin who worked for PSL in the late 1990's? The French engineer who supported Mastersizer S systems for 2 years. Antoine left us to return home to France as planned. He later joined Genevac (the sample concentrator products that we no longer sell) and is now running Genevac business from Lyon in France. He now has 2 baby children !

  • And then there is John Ryan who was our chief engineer in the early days, from 1990 or so. John still does consultancy for us, as a contract engineer on IT issues and sometimes electronics. John has his own business and a small group of clients in Ireland.

  • Niamh Walsh who was with us for several years has recently become a proud mother and after her maternity leave has decided to stay with her young family and leave us. We wish her all the best.
