Microfluidics are innovators in the processing of suspensions
and emulsions to generate product with smaller sizes and
narrower distributions than conventional or alternative
approaches.The product groups fall into
2 categories, first the main group is classic Top-down
processing; where high shear cells reduce sizes in flowing
systems (as on the left below). More recently they introduced
Bottom-up processing (as on the right) - where reactions occur
inside the shear cells and uniquely produce Nano distributions.
Top Down processing
The applications of top down processing
start with classic particle size reduction but extend to other
applications as well:
Particle size
reduction to Nano sizes,
with narrow distributions using scalable technology - such that
small scale experiments can be increased onto pilot rigs or even
process systems. This is achieved using high shear fluid
processors and more details are available on
Microfluidics main web site.
Cell disruption
to achieve release of internal materials, such as proteins, with
minimal protein damage. The
Microfluidics approach to cell disruption
is tough on hard cells like Yeasts yet typically improves yields
over conventional technologies.
Nano emulsion
production is another application where you can
optimise your product with the high shear fluid processors;
producing smaller sizes, more stable emulsions, better
bio-availabilities and again, its scalable. For more information
